Description
Presented for the collector of vintage bicycle memorabilia is this wonderful little badge of the League of American Wheelmen dating from the late 1890s or early 1900s. This badge is in untouched, uncleaned, as-found condition with a wonderful patina. The badge measures 3/4 of an inch in diameter and is struck in sterling silver which has been highlighted with purple enamel. The central vignette features the League of American Wheelmen tri-winged logo and monogram. This is surrounded by a belt bearing the legend "NEW YORK STATE DIVISION" which has been highlighted with purple enamel. The enamel is in perfect condition. The reverse features a hinged pin and open loop catch which functions as it should. The badge is hallmarked on the reverse "JOHN FRICK NY STERLING." The John Frick Company was a bespoke manufacturing firm in New York City whose specialties included organizational, society, and military insignia often stuck in precious metals and featuring fine enamel work. This is an excellent specimen of his work. This fine badge would complement any collection of early bicycling ephemera or League of American Wheelmen badges and medals. Fine Americana from Brother Rabbit's hutch!
