ca 1910 Hertwig 13” Pet Name Lowbrow China Head Doll ~ German ~ Kidolene Body

Description

This is a Hertwig pet-name rosy cheeked lowbrow doll with the characteristic eyebrows, plain irises and heart shaped mouth. Dark hair, bisque forearms, kidolene (leather) body, which is unusual for a pet name doll. On the back shoulder area, the words PATENT APPD/FOR would have been above GERMANY but the bodice of the kidolene hide it. In front the gilt pet name is half covered by the kidolene bodice but it appears to be Martha.
The bisque hands have some light spots. The head and shoulders are near-perfect but for a couple of tiny paint losses on the back of her hair. The kidolene body does show the effects of being over 100 years old. The leather has constricted, as it and one leg has a large tear at the seam if knee where it goes from leather to cloth. I wrapped it in a small piece of Ace bandage. It needs a more professional fix eventually.
All original clothing except for shoes and stockings. Lace top, cotton bloomers, cotton lace petticoat, period shoes and period silky stockings, and a skirt that looks like raw silk, but I am not an expert in fabrics. All clothing is in excellent condition.
