Description
5-inch tall antique pin-cushion half-doll, mold #5175 from Germany, circa 1900.China "Spanish Girl" mold is 2 1/2 inches hight with the mold #5175 and Germany marked on her waist where she attaches to gold pin-cushion base. This girl was well-used as her original purpose of a pin-cushion for many years; she has tiny pin and needle holes all over her skirt and may even have needles deep inside her skirt. The diameter of her base is also 5 inches. The colorful hat pins in her base keep her upright so she won't lean backwards.
Flaws:
1. Smudge of red paint on her left shoulder that was fired on when she was produced in the Hertwig factory all those years ago (please see photo)
2. Stains on bottom of base (please see photo)
Pin-cushion half-doll reached the height of popularity from 1900-1930 and most were made during that time period mostly in Germany by dozens of companies. Very few have a mold number to be able to know who made them.
The "Half-Doll" book by Sally Van Luven and Susan Graham says mold 5175 was made by Hertwig. Hertwig produced dolls from 1884-1941 in Katzhuttle, Thuringen, Germany. They are the same company who made the fabulous "Pet Name" china dolls. The final photo is from page 39 of the book and shows the "Spanish" doll mold.
She is one of the first dolls I ever purchased on eBay around 2003; I am trying to relieve the overcrowding of my dolls. She has been stored away from heat and sun.
Priority shipping recommended for the extra care in shipping since she is a wonderful piece of history with a pedigree.
