    Description

1963 Customized Zippo Lighter to Maj Gen John K. Hester - From the 24th Infantry Division
A classic Zippo from the early Vietnam War era, embellished with Major General's rank, the 24th Infantry Division insignia in enamel, and by engraving that attributes the piece to an Air Force senior leader. It reads "John K. Hester" and "Officers, HQ 24th Inf Div." At the time, 1964-1965, Major General Hester was commanding the 17th Air Force at Ramstein AFB, Germany. Tragically, Hester died of injuries sustained from a parachute jump in April 1965 while attending an Airborne Couse run by this division.
General Hester's career began in 1938 as a fighter pilot, taking him to China where he flew 50 combat missions against the Japanese as a Squadron Commander with the 14th Air Force, the famous "Flying Tigers." He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and Air Medal before serving on Curtis LeMay's Air Staff. For more details of Hester's career, view the attached video!
