Description
This is an original pet-name low brow porcelain doll by Hertwig with a slightly turned head. She is all-original...her body is linen cloth, filled with sawdust, and there are blue silk ribbons securing the breastplate to the body. Her shoes are painted, laced black and have blue ribbons just below the knee. The only wear is to the paint of her hair in a few places (as seen in photos), and to the gold paint of her name "Dorothy." She is quite old - 1905, or so, so it's remarkable that she's in such beautiful condition. On her back it says, "Patent Appd For - Germany," which is the mark applied to the original pet name dolls made by Hertwig, specifically for the American market. Her slip and bloomers are also original.
Dorothy's dress is all hand-made/sewn. The top is made of vintage cotton lace and satin, and the skirt is made of embellished antique silk georgette. Every bead on the dress (hundreds of them!) were sewed on, by hand. The skirt has a crinoline beneath it, applied ribbon flowers, and lace trim. There is a velvet ribbon around her waist, and the dress is secured by three snaps. The dress is lined as well (see photo). The dress took approximately 80 hours of work to sew.
Her chatelaine-style purse is made from French steel-cut beads and is lined with the same satin used in the sleeves of her dress. The bottom of it is lined with pearls, and the side with silver foiled bugle beads. It has a silver chain and a clasp that can be attached to her belt (as it is in photos). But it can easily be removed, if you wish (lobster-claw clasp). The purse alone took around 20 hours to make, as it is completely hand-done.
Lastly, she is wearing a pearl necklace.
NOTE: The price reflects not only the excellent condition of the doll, but of the work done on her dress and accessories. Please note that NOTHING of Dorothy's is applied with glue, or made with cheap fabrics. Even the hundreds of beads on her dress are glass! I wanted her to be as authentic as possible when it came to fabrics and wanted the workmanship to reflect how special a doll she is. My hope is that she, her outfit, and her accessories will last for many years to come.
She will be packed carefully, and sent with an expedited (and insured) shipping service.
